Welcome to Southgate Community Schools!

April 4, 2021

Dear Southgate Families

At the arrival of spring and the uptick of COVID rates, school districts are back to wrestling with their role in supporting, protecting, and educating students. Some school districts are shifting to remote instruction, briefly or indefinitely. Others are making no changes.

Southgate Community Schools has a unique feature in its mode of instruction that separates it from most other districts. In-person middle school and high school students may choose to shift to remote instruction at any time, for any reason, and for any duration of time. If you are uncomfortable with the travel activities of other students, or have traveled over spring break, we encourage your middle school or high school student to attend remotely April 6-9.  The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is providing COVID rapid antigen testing. Please take advantage of these opportunities.

If you are uncomfortable with the rising COVID positivity rate in the county, you may shift your elementary, middle school, or high school students to remote instruction on a more permanent basis. For elementary students, this shift would schedule your child into remote instruction for the remainder of the school year. If you are interested in doing this, please contact your principal as soon as possible.

Our Board of Education will re-evaluate the District's mode of instruction at its virtual Board of Education meeting on April 13, 2021. Please note that Southgate Community Schools still has had no documented cases of school-associated COVID transmissions between students, other than those occurring through high school winter sports. All athletes, ages 13-19, begin weekly COVID testing tomorrow, April 5. If we begin to see evidence of in-school transmissions resulting from classroom attendance, despite our mitigation measures, we will re-evaluate our mode of instruction plan immediately, independent of our monthly process of consideration.

Thank you for your ongoing support and caution as we continue through this difficult time.

Titan Strong,

Sharon Irvine, Superintendent
