Chapter 4: Atomic Structure

CHAPTER FOUR GOALS:

  • Summarize Dalton's atomic theory.
  • Distinguish among protons, electrons, and neutrons in terms of their relative masses and charges.
  • Explain how the atomic number identifies an element.
  • Infer the composition of an atom by using its mass number and atomic number.
  • Explain how isotopes of an element differ.
  • Explain why the atomic masses of elements are not whole numbers.
  • Calculate the average atomic mass of an element from isotope data.
