SOUTHGATE WINTER GUARD PROGRAM 15’ - 16’

We are glad that you took interest in the Southgate Anderson Winter Guard Program! You are making a great decision for a well rounded education, now and for the future! Our goal is to provide an exciting, educational, positive and memorable experience for all members. We hope to challenge, and encourage while producing a professional, artistic and competitive program.

The Southgate Winter Guard Program offers three separate teams divided by age, experience, and/or performance level. Each member will be placed on the team that they will be most successful and comfortable in the upcoming season. Southgate Middle School Winter Guard (SMS) is our beginner group including members in 8th grade or below. SMS competes in the Jr. Regional A class in the Michigan Color Guard Circuit (MCGC) which is designed for Middle School Teams. Southgate Anderson Winter Guard JV serves as our intermediate group and includes members in 12th grade and below. JV competes in the Scholastic AA class in MCGC and also competes on an international level in WGI (Winter Guard International) which consists of an in-state WGI Regional. Southgate Anderson Winter Guard (SAWG) serves as our most advanced group and will include members in 8th through 12th grade. SAWG competes in the Scholastic A class in MCGC and WGI, which includes two regionals and WGI World Championships!

Guard Placement

Guard placements will take place on Monday and Tuesday, November 16 & 17, 2015 from 6:30-9:00pm in the Gerisch Middle School Gymnasium. Attendance on both nights is MANDATORY. All equipment will be available for use at these sessions.

Dues

Dues pay for the cost of staff, guest instructors, team registration, equipment, props, travel, banquet, etc. (Dues are non-refundable, and will not be returned to members who are dismissed or leave the program. Furthermore, members are responsible for the entire seasons’ dues even if they do not complete the season.)  A student cannot enter into our program until any debt from any previous school program has been cleared. $25 is due the first full practice to ensure your spot for the season.

Items Not Included In Dues

There are a few items that may be needed throughout the season that are NOT covered by dues. These items include (but are not limited to): gloves, equipment bag, track jacket, undergarments/shapewear, show makeup/ hair necessities, tights, etc.

Costume Fee

On top of dues, each student will be required to pay a separate costume fee used to purchase their personal costume for the production. The costume will be yours to keep at the end of the season. Due date and price will be determined at a later time.

Fundraising

We offer a large variety of fundraisers to help lower the cost of the Southgate Winter Guard Programs. Volunteers are the backbone of every event and activity. We need help from every Guard Family to keep our program strong and sound.

Member Responsibility and Accountability

You will be assigned various duties throughout the course of the season. It is expected that these be completed consistently without request. Many hands make light work. No one will be treated differently. Everyone is expected to fulfill their responsibilities before and above all personal responsibilities.

Member Expectations

Attendance is required at every rehearsal and performance. Your role in the show may be altered if you miss any rehearsal at the discretion of the staff. Report time will be at least 15 minutes prior to each rehearsal. It is important to respect your team by being ready to rehearse promptly at the start time.

  • Attendance is required at every rehearsal and performance. Please refer to the calendar for all mandatory dates. Your role in the production may be altered if you miss ANY rehearsal at the discretion of the staff.

  • Attire - Members will be required to rehearse in all black, tight fitted clothing. You will want to have a hoodie and/or sweatpants for times when the gym is cool, or until your body is warmed up.  You should also have athletic shoes available to condition in to help better support your body.

  • Conditioning - All members will condition at every rehearsal. This is not optional as it prepares your body for the season and getting through a full-length show.

  • Appearance - Hair must be up and back out of your face during rehearsal. Unless otherwise mentioned.

  • Equipment will be assigned to each member that he/she will need to perform his or her show.  Once assigned, the equipment becomes the member’s responsibility. It should be maintained by each member and ready for use at the beginning of each rehearsal. You should label each piece of equipment clearly.

Member Conduct/Being a Team Player

The Southgate Winter Guard Program has spent a lot of time and effort building a great reputation in MCGC and WGI. Members and Families are expected to respect this and keep the integrity of the Program at a high level. Each member is expected to behave with the utmost respect, modesty and dignity while in public. It is unacceptable to make inappropriate comments about, or engage in inappropriate behavior toward any other MCGC or WGI Unit. Every team is here for the same reason, to perform their very best. You are an individual, but an extension of this organization. Please remember that someone is always watching or listening. When in costume or Southgate Track Jacket, you represent the entire Program, our Schools and our City.

By accepting membership into this program you are committing to be a hardworking, optimistic, and dedicated member of this team. It is expected that you give your very best at every rehearsal/performance. It is expected that you respect every member and staff member of this program. You are not to speak poorly of any other member of the organization.  It is important to remember that we are all on the same team, working toward a common goal.

School Discipline/Grades

Each member is responsible for maintaining passing grades throughout the season. We understand that grades take priority, however it is important that each student find a routine that allows him or her to achieve passing grades in school without interfering with the set rehearsal schedule. School disciplinary action such as suspension from school, will be carried into the Guard Program and will result in an unexcused absence (or more) which could then result in not being able to perform and holding the rest of the team back. Lastly, we receive weekly emails stating who is eligible to perform due to grades. You must find a routine that allows you to be both successful in school and on this team.

Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/YouTube/other Social Media

While we will use these avenues on a daily basis, it is necessary to be responsible in their use with regard to our Program. If you have an issue, personal or otherwise, regarding the Southgate Winter Guard Program, it is expected that you do NOT include everyone in cyberspace. Rather, concerns should be brought to the attention of the staff or the person it concerns directly. Let’s face our challenges and not "Facebook them!” Negative comments about another member of the guard, parents, volunteers, chaperone’s, staff, etc. will not be tolerated and could result in dismissal from the program. It is important to keep the integrity of this Program at a high level. Members/Family members are NOT to post any rehearsal or performance videos on YouTube or any other website. Any and all posts will be made by the Director or staff.

We do utilize a Facebook Group: search for Southgate Winter Guard Program. This is to help share information to the membership and to our fans. This group is not for questions/concerns/or anything negative. Should you have any concerns, contact a Director or staff member. We intend to use this group for positive, information sharing purposes AND celebrating our teams!

Lastly, we utilize Remind. Remind is a free, safe, and simple messaging tool that helps teachers/coaches share important updates and reminders with students & parents. Subscribe by text, email or using the Remind APP. All personal information is kept private. Teachers/coaches will never see your phone number, nor will you see theirs.

Text "@swgp” to the phone number 81010 or (734) 796-2892. Or to receive messages via email, send an email to swgp@mail.remind.com.

Facilities

The Southgate Winter Guard Program is blessed with amazing facilities for rehearsals and performances in our District and as we travel. Our organization must take great care in nurturing the relationships which allow us to utilize these venues year after year. Every member is expected to help leave the facility better than it was upon our arrival. Appropriate attire must be worn at all times. The first impression of our team will always be professional. Be kind, friendly, welcoming, and respectful.

Criminal/Background Checks/Driver's License/Insurance

Each team will Car Pool to each event. Each driver must have a criminal/background clearance on file with the school district, as well as a current Driver's License, registration and proof of insurance for the vehicle.

Flags/Props

We hand make all of the flags used in the Winter Guard Program. This cuts the price down by sometimes 75%! Anyone can help even if you don’t sew. There is cutting, folding, pinning and gluing that all needs to happen before the sewing can even begin. Even students can help! Also, we may have props to help the overall effect of the production for any team. We will need help building and designing them. Construction/Flag making parties normally happen in late December or early January.

Bad Weather

In case of inclement weather, the host school of the competition will notify the Director of a cancellation one hour before the start of competition.  Always assume the show is a go!

State Volunteers

Every competitive unit in MCGC is required to provide two (2) parent volunteers for championships held at Saginaw Valley State University. These volunteers work a 4 hour shift AND are able to see their child perform AND will receive free admission! We need 2 volunteers for each group (6 total). If we do not fill these spots, there is a $300 fee PER GROUP (could total $900) and we could be disqualified.

Contact

Each Team will have a Chairperson to help with specific information, paperwork and other questions. They will be announced at a later time. If you have any questions about the technical side of the program please contact Director’s:
