Mortal mother: Alcmene
From the city of Argos

Hera hates Hercules because he is the illegitimate son of Zeus, so she tries to kill baby Hercules with poisonous snakes. Baby Herc is so strong that he kills the snakes.

Herc's parents are worried about angering Hera, so they abandon him in the wilderness. Baby Herc is rescued by Athena, who brings him to Hera to be nursed. Hera does not recognize Hercules, and nurses him. Her milk gives him super strength.  Hera is angered at being tricked, and will always have a special grudge against Herc.

As a child, Hercules is clumsy, socially awkward, and bad tempered.

When he grows up, her assists a foreign king in a war, and as a reward, Herc receives the king's daughter, Megara, as his wife.  They are happily married and have 2 children.

Hera sends a madness on Hercules, causing him to kill his new family. He is filled with remorse, and goes to the Oracle at Delphi to seek advice from Apollo.

Apollo tells Hercules that he must be purified because of his crimes. He is to report to king Eurystheus, his cousin, who will assign him various labors.  Once he has been purified, he can return to normal life.

Before beginning his labors, Hercules is trained by many teachers:

Chiron, the immortal centaur, teaches him archery.
Castor, son of Zeus and Leda, teaches him swordsmanship.
Amphitryon, his father, teachers him riding and chariot driving
Linus teaches him letters & music, but Hercules kills him in a fit of rage
Rhadamanthus, son of Zeus and Europa, teaches him wisdom and justice

Hercules also receives gifts from the gods to help him.
-Apollo gives him a special bow and arrows
-Hephaestus gives him a suit of golden armor
-Poseidon gives him a team of horses
